Manchester Ship Canal Cruise, Wednesday August 9th
This was the last of our day trips for this year and turned out to be a very enjoyable day.
The coach took us to the Pierhead in Liverpool where the Royal Iris picked up the remaining passengers having started 10 minutes earlier from Seacombe.
We experienced a unique 35-mile canal cruise, taking almost six hours, linking the two great cities of Liverpool and Manchester. A Blue Badge guide sailed with us and provided a very informative and interesting commentary, recounting historical events and pointing out areas of interest as we sailed along. The new Mersey Gateway bridge, a very impressive new landmark in the Runcorn area was seen framed by the old railway and distinctive arched road bridges. Sadly, we weren’t able to spend time at Salford Quays due a need for dredging work at the Salford end of the canal and being disembarked short of the final destination where the coaches were parked for the return journey direct to Washway Farm and home after a super day out.
